This post is all about buying non-toxic candles.
Learning about all the chemicals in many of our products is insanely eye-opening. It is no different with candles.
We all know that the candle section of a store has some strong scents. Some candles have soft smells while others are quite potent. It is important to learn about what chemicals are safe and which ones are not so safe.
When we light these candles we inhale the chemicals that they release.
In this post I will share with you what ingredients to watch out for, which ones are safe, and my favorite non-toxic candles.
The search for Non-Toxic Candles: Ingredients to AVOID
It is important to look at the label of any candle before purchasing it. These chemicals are unsafe for humans and pets when inhaled. These are the ingredients to avoid.
- Phthalates- These are hormone-disrupting chemicals that are often used to enhance scents in candles. It is best to use essential oils as scents instead.
- Paraffin Wax- This ingredient is a petroleum byproduct that when burned releases chemicals like benzene and toluene. These are known as carcinogens, meaning capable of causing cancer.
- Lead Wicks- When wicks made with lead are burned, they can release lead particles into the air potentially causing health risks.
- Formaldehyde: Some candles may contain additives or preservatives that release formaldehyde when burned. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can cause respiratory irritation.
- Acetone: Candles made with paraffin wax may release acetone when burned. Acetone is a solvent that can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat.
- Benzene: Benzene, a known carcinogen, can be released when burning candles made from paraffin wax.
- Acrolein: Burning candles can release acrolein, a potential respiratory irritant, into the air.
The Search For Non-Toxic Candles: SAFE ingredients
When searching for non-toxic candles look for these ingredients that will reduce your exposure to toxic substances. These ingredients are safe for both humans and pets.
- Natural Essential Oils: If you want a scented candle, opt for those scented with natural essential oils. However, it’s essential to be cautious with strong essential oils, as some can be irritating to pets.
- Soy Wax: Candles made from soy wax are a pet-friendly option. Soy wax is derived from soybeans and doesn’t release harmful toxins when burned.
- Beeswax: Beeswax candles are another natural option that is generally safe for dogs. Beeswax is a natural substance produced by bees.
- Coconut Wax: Coconut wax offers a clean, slow-burning, and sustainable alternative to traditional candle waxes, with a smooth appearance and good scent throw.
- Cotton or Wood Wicks: Candles with wicks made from cotton or wood are safer for pets than those with lead or metal-core wicks.
When using candles near dogs be especially cautious. Dogs have extremely good nose scents, much stronger than humans. It’s best to take these safety precautions when using candles.
- Avoid Paraffin Wax: Again, avoid this wax. It is a byproduct of petroleum and can release potentially harmful chemicals when burned. It’s best to choose candles made from natural alternatives.
- Minimize Fragrances: Some pets may be sensitive to strong scents. Opt for lightly scented or unscented candles to reduce the risk of irritation.
- Supervise Candles: Never leave burning candles unattended, especially if pets have access to the area. Pets may be curious and could accidentally knock over a candle.
- Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in the room where the candle is burning to minimize any potential impact on air quality.
